How conversion tracking works

Want to know how conversion tracking works? In this article we explain how conversion tracking works

The short answer: Using conversion tracking tags, like Google Tag or Facebook Pixel, user behavior is tracked. Once the user performs a targeted action, that is recorded and presented to the webmaster.

How does conversion tracking work? – The detailed answer!

As evident from the name, conversion tracking is a process of tracking an action that is desired. Conversion in the “online world” refers to a visitor or customer performing an action that is required by the owner of the website or service.

For instance: as a website owner, you want your visitor to sign up for your newsletter, or you want them to make a purchase or start a download, and the visitor does that, which means you have converted that visitor.

Steps involved in conversion tracking:

Step -1: Define the action that you need to record. It can be a Signup form, a Newsletter, a latest offers list, a purchase, a download, or even landing on a certain page.

Step -2: Configure your tracking tag. In the past, when only analytics codes were available, tracking certain specific actions were difficult. Now with powerful and smart tags, you can track the tiniest of individual actions. Some examples of popular tags are Google Tag and Facebook Pixel.

Step -3: Install the tag and test it. Testing your tag is absolutely necessary. Make sure to test your tag using a mobile phone, desktop, and even using the “incognito” or “private” tab function of modern browsers.

Step -4: You are done configuring. Head to the tag “Dashboard” and start noting your Conversion Tracking.

Difficulties in Conversion Tracking:

Some browsers like “Bravo” and “Firefox” are actively working against tracking, and they will make sure to render the tracking code useless. You must take that into account. One of the ways to go around that is to be forthcoming about your Cookies and enable Cookie selection (also known as Cookie consent). This way, the visitor can decide to allow or disallow the use of cookies and quite possibly allow the use of your Tags in use.

Conversion Tracking and Paid Advertising:

Every now and then, we need to invest in paid advertising. It is a sure way of getting more visitors and customers to visit your website or a specific landing page. When it comes to spending hard-earned cash on advertising, we need to be sure that a specific ad is yielding favorable results. To know the precise performance of any ad, we need to use conversion tracking on that particular ad. Google Tag and Facebook Pixel both have the capability to track any specific events tied to an ad.

Conversion tracking for A/B testing:

If you are interested in trying out a new design or want to test the efficacy of a specific ad set, this feature is of the most importance to you. It can help you understand your visitors better and help you pick the most effective design for you.

If appropriately used, conversion tracking can help grow your business and also help increase conversion by helping you select the most effective design of your landing pages.
